Shell casings and belt links fall from a Humvee-mounted M240G medium machine gun as Marines from Battalion Landing Team 1st Bn., 2nd Marines engage insurgents planting an improvised explosive device alongside a road by the Euphrates River near Forward Operating Base Hit, Iraq, Jan. 2, 2006. The engagement occured after the motorized patrol spotted the insurgents shortly after they discovering an IED laid in their path as they supported the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable)'s ongoing counterinsurgency efforts in Iraq's Al Anbar province with the 2nd Marine Division.
