Capt. Joel M. Lomasney, the ground training officer for Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 (Reinforced), 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and a New Orleans native, takes a dip with “Ready Ape” during a “Steel Beach” picnic on the flight deck of USS Bataan (LHD 5) June 26, 2009. “Ready Ape” has been the VMM-263(Rein) mascot since the squadron’s tour during the Vietnam War. Marines and Sailors from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and Bataan came together for a day of food, fun and games to build comradery during a scheduled deployment. The MEU, embarked aboard the ships of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, is currently serving as the theater reserve force for U.S. Central Command.
